President's Fall Message
Happy fall to all Beta Xi Chapter members!
As a member of Beta Xi for over 15 years, I have served as treasurer, faculty counselor, and historian. Now, I am honored to have been elected as President for 2019-2021 and follow in the footsteps of Past-President, Dr. Jennifer Graber.
Under her leadership, Beta Xi has been a recipient of several Chapter Key awards and this year, we will receive our 10th Chapter Key award. The Chap-ter Key award, established in 1991, honors Sigma chapters that excel in the following activi-ties: membership recruitment and retention; publicity and pro-graming; professional and lead-ership development; and local, national, and international col-laboration. In addition, Beta Xi is the recipient of a second Ethel Palmer Clark Founders Award which is the highest award given by Sigma that recognizes ex-traordinary chapter excellence by providing evidence that meets the following criteria: leadership, knowledge, service, community, and sustainability. Beta Xi Chapter will be recog-nized for these awards at the 45th Biennial Convention in Washington, D.C. this Novem-ber.
Beta Xi is a very active chapter that continues to support the mission of Sigma to advance world health and celebrate nurs-ing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Please consider your involvement with some of our outreach initiatives this year. Beta Xi’s Membership Appreciation Night co-sponsored with the Nursing Alumni Network and the UD School of Nursing was a fun-filled evening held on October 1, 2019, at Deer Park where over 50 members attend-ed the event. Founders Day was held on October 5, 2019. Mem-bers were encouraged to do 90 minutes of service in the com-munity and/or give a donation to the Sigma Foundation to support grants and programs provided by Sigma.
This year, the 33rd Annual Tri-State Consortium Brunch was held for the first time at the University of Delaware STAR Tower Audion on Sunday, October 20, 2019. With over 100 people in attendance, Beta Xi members and School of Nursing faculty, Jo-anne Creasy-Thomas and April Prior, and our leadership interns, Sarah Fabietti, Amy Jackson, and Olivia Rankin, assisted with registration, welcoming guests to the venue, and selling tickets for the gift baskets donated by several chapters. Dean of the Col-lege of Health Sciences, Dr. Kathy Matt, welcomed all the guests and showcased the clinics housed at the STAR campus. Distinguished speakers, Drs. Jennifer Graber and Jennifer Saylor gave their popular presentation by providing examples how members can connect collaborate, and catalyze their own chapters. After brunch, the highlight of the day was the presentation entitled "Driving Change: Rethinking the APRN’s Role in Reshaping Healthcare" by Dr. Richard Ricciardi, who will be inducted as the 33rd Presi-dent of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International at the 45th Bienni-al Convention in Washington, D.C. this November. Although it was a rainy day, the members enjoyed networking with other chapter members and touring the STAR Tow-er provided by Drs. Graber and Saylor!
The next major event is the fall induction which will be held on Monday, November 11, 2019 from 5 to 8pm at the Courtyard Marriott, Newark, DE. As we celebrate Veteran’s Day, Dr. Susan Sheehy, a former Army Nurse and current UD School of Nursing facul-ty, will be the keynote speaker.
In addition, the 45th Biennial Convention will be held in Washington, D.C., Nov 16-20, 2019! Several of the Beta Xi members are candidates running for an office/position, doing presentations, and/or representing Beta Xi as delegates this year. I hope to see you there!
I look forward to working with all of you as Beta Xi continues to increase its outreach to the community and increase international recognition and service. Please watch for announcements, news and events about outreach, service, and global activities via the Circle, Twitter, and our Facebook pages. We always appreciate feedback and ideas so please do not hesitate to contact a Beta Xi Board member!
